With an easy-to-use wizard driven interface, you can quickly recover lost multimedia files in just 3 simple steps: Scan: The program runs a thorough scan of your media devise that contains the lost multimedia files. This could include a Mac hard drive, digital camera, memory card or one of many more. Select: Once the scan is completed Photo Recovery provides a clear list of recoverable files, for you to select the ones you wish to restore. Restore: Finally click the recover button to restore your precious files. Subsequently you can then save these files to a user defined location. Key Functions promote retrieving multimedia files more efficiently:
Resume Recovery Tab: When a scan has been performed and saved, the Resume Recovery option allows you to recover data from that saved scan file at a later time. Create Image Tab: Intelligent feature used to take an image of the hard disk or selected drives. The image is then stored in a single file which contains all the information of the 'imaged' area. Customer Reviews
If you have deleted some photos music or video and emptied the recycle bin then it should be possible with this software to get the information back as long as new information, photos, documents have not already been writen to the drive.
At a basic level the software is simple to use, scan the drive, select from the information detected which you want to recover, and restore it.
The product does not get 5 stars as in practice is not that simple, and you may not get the results you want.
The blurb states 'Complete recovery when data is lost due to damaged operating system, error message when reading/ writing, deliberate or accidental formatting, defective or damaged storage media, accidental deletion, and unexpected turn off of the camera device'.
So I expected that an image which I could see on the camera but which was not visible in Windows or Adobe photoshop would be recovered. It was not :( and I concluded that this was becuase the file was damaged. This product does not repair defective files for that Stellar Phoenix make another product 'JPEG repair' a test version of which can be downloaded from the internet, and then purchased on line.
Out of the box the software appeared to install quickly on Windows 7, and I was ready to go. To begin you select 'start scan' then you get a list of internal or external drives to choose from. I choose the 500gig hard drive on my pc and selected 'start scan' again. This was a very sloooow process similar to running a defrag. It took 15 hours to complete the scan with the software searching for images, video, and music files. (When I read the instructions and realised I could have selected the advanced options where I could have chosen just the file types I was intersted in from the ~ 55 files types supported. e.g. JPEG, NEF, MOV, MP3. You can also select to scan only part of the disk, however you dont get a list of folders to select, but only sectors of the hard disk. If you deleted files and don't know where they are I can't see how this is very helpful.)
The scan output was not very user friendly. The software finds huge amounts of information, which included hundreds of images I'd never knowingly downloaded, and which I expect many are cookies (e.g. Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team which I have watched on BBC iplayer!) Each file is assigned a number which is not the original number from the device. It was not apparent how these numbers are generated so they were not useful to me. There is a column indicating the image size, but I could not find a way to sort on this parameter which would have been helpful to separate the cookies from the deleted images. The files are split into folders by file type, so I could ignore .NEF and .PNG for example, but I was interested in JPEG and there were numerous folders labelled JPEG1,2,3 so hundreds of images to review. To decide if you want to recover a file you select the name and the image appears in a preview window. However some of the files were not displayed and gave an error message 'damaged file'. For music and video files the preview function is not supported or the files don't play for all formats e.g. MPEG, M4P, MOV, AVI, another limitation to the usability.
Having selected some images to recover I found the installation process was not complete and got prompted to register the software and pay, after reviewing the packaging I found the info required on the sleeve of the CD, however I had to enter personal details before the product would work. The final frustrating step was not being able to restore the images back on to the C drive, I had to connect an external drive to the pc to recover the images. This was also required if I wanted to save the scan results
As the results were hard to interpret I repeated the exercise with a 4g compact flash card where the original files I wished to recover had been recorded. This card had been reformatted and ~200 new images written to it. Scanning the card still took 1.5 hours even with only one file format to find. The software found 217 images, the 200 which are clearly visible in windows file manager or can be extracted using photoshop and 7 which had been deleted on the camera. None of the original images written prior to the reformatting of the card were visible. I had expect this result as the new images would have been written over the original ones, but on the box it says 'complete recovery as a result of formatting' which is misleading in my opinion.
I would only recommend this product if you accidentally delete some important images/video or music, have not written any new files of any type to your pc, or memory stick, and have not backed the files up in another place, and have a day or so to spare sifting through the results.
An overall excellent product but has a few installation problems. Eventually got it to work with third party help, virus scan software problems mainly (my settings were over-zealous). Having used a similar system before I was not impressed by this. The software worked fine apart from this but I would not buy it again based on the problem I had, as there are other programs available for free that have a similar function. It managed to recover photos from a broken 2gb SDHC card, which I was glad about. So in summary it worked, at least for me.
