Customer Reviews
I had WinDVD 9 which I was not overly impressed with anyway, but it did work - I required it to play Blue-Ray movies. Version 9 was quite heavy but did work, with the annoying feature that for actual blue ray discs (which I only use every couple of months) it needed to update an authentication key every time, and this feature was a little unstable to the point that a couple of times I ended up having to re-install the software to get everything updated and working - meaning that the family had to watch the movie another night! I had had the software around 18 months when I got Avatar on Blue-Ray - this required more than an update: if I wanted to run Avatar, I needed to actually shell out more money again for WinDVD 2010. I went ahead and did this so that we could watch Avatar and other new Blue-ray movies, but find 2010 to be heavier again than it's predecessor and unstable. It usually crashes or freezes just trying to play a regular DVD and we use other DVD software for this (sometimes WinDVD 9!). There are issues where the screensaver kicks in during the movie and I have tried a lot of different fixes to prevent this without success - I now just have to switch the screensaver off prior to watching the movie. Corel's own support is not very useful, and even the forums are a bit hostile - be prepared to submit all of the following details correctly if you want to join and make comments: processor, ram, video Card, sound card, Hard Drive Capacity and the system drive that the application is installed on. I wasn't comfortable with having to give this level of information and have not come across this being an obligatory part of making forum posts before.
In summary, given that it is just a media player and many of its competitors are free it really is a lot of money for a clunky application - so when in addition in is unstable and requires constant maintenance to keep it running it is not good value. The straw that breaks the camel's back for me is that you may be required not to far into the future to buy the next version again if you want to keep playing the latest disks. In this case, it would be cheaper to buy a physical standalone player, although this somewhat defeats the purpose of a media PC!
I used WinDVD 9 for several years for playing DVDs and I found it to be one of the best media players I'd tried. After fitting a Blu-ray DVD to my machine I needed a new player so upgraded to WinDVD2010 Pro. What a waste of money. On my machine (it's a stable Win7 Quad-core with reasonable graphics card and 8GB RAM) WinDVD either hangs frequently or fails to load particular Blu-Ray titles (Independence Day for starters). Other times, it runs just fine. I'm holding out for an update release but shouldn't hold my breath.
